In Faridganj upazila of Chandpur, a road repair project under the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has drawn criticism after the carpeting began peeling off soon after work started. Locals alleged that substandard bitumen and stones were used in the renovation of the Gridkalindya-Islamganj road, which cost about Tk 19.7 million for 2,700 meters of reconstruction. The project was supposed to be completed by December last year but began only this year, intensifying public frustration.

Residents expressed anger and disappointment, saying they had long suffered due to the road’s poor condition and had hoped the new work would bring relief. However, the early damage has raised fears that the road will become even more dangerous during the monsoon. Following complaints, the Upazila Engineer and other officials inspected the site. Engineer Abrar Ahmad said the matter was being investigated seriously and that no irregularities would be tolerated.

The contractor, Monzil Hossain, denied the allegations, claiming political opponents deliberately damaged the road. LGED Executive Engineer Ahsan Kabir confirmed that smaller, lower-quality stones were used and ordered the contractor to redo the faulty sections.
