BNP leader Ishraque Hossain denied that his supporters locked the gates of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) headquarters, saying he does not believe they were responsible. He called on those in charge of city administration to reopen the gates and resume services.
Following a court verdict, the Election Commission issued a gazette officially declaring him the mayor, Ishraque stated. However, the government has refused to acknowledge the appointment, which he claimed highlights its loss of neutrality. "That’s why citizens took to the streets voluntarily," he said, adding that even DSCC officials and staff joined the movement.
He clarified that he had no personal ambition to occupy the mayor’s chair but aimed to expose the government's partiality toward a particular political party. As part of a symbolic protest, he oversaw limited service operations for a few days. “If that amounts to a crime, let the government take legal action,” he concluded.
