China has issued a high alert over possible major flooding after a landslide created a dam-like lake near the Nepal-Tibet border. The lake formed where the Chochhen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers meet after debris blocked the river’s natural flow. State broadcaster CCTV reported that about 2.5 million cubic metres of water had accumulated in the lake by Friday.
China’s Ministry of Water Resources said water had begun overflowing from the site on Thursday. Officials warned that roughly another 3 million cubic metres of water could enter the lake between Thursday and the weekend, increasing the risk that its banks could collapse.
Authorities temporarily suspended rescue operations because of the dangerous conditions, before restarting them after the situation came somewhat under control. A breach of the lake’s banks could cause fresh flooding downstream, according to the officials’ forecast.
