The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has appointed state defense lawyers for Obaidul Quader and six other accused in a crimes against humanity case related to killings during the July Revolution. The order was issued on Thursday after the accused failed to appear before the court, leading the tribunal to consider them absconding. The tribunal also scheduled January 18 for the formal hearing on charge framing against the seven accused.
According to the tribunal proceedings, the other accused include Awami League Joint General Secretary A F M Bahauddin Nasim, former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain, and General Secretary Wali Asif Enan. Earlier, on December 18, the tribunal issued arrest warrants against all seven after the prosecution formally submitted charges.
During the hearing, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and Gazi Tamim presented separate charges for each accused. Obaidul Quader faces three specific counts—ordering, instigation, and incitement—while the others were also held responsible under related allegations.
