BNP candidate Kamruzzaman Kamrul has won the Sunamganj-1 constituency, covering Dharmapasha, Madhyanagar, Tahirpur, and Jamalganj, by a large margin over Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Maulana Tofayel Ahmed Khan. The results were confirmed on Thursday night by returning officer Dr. Mohammad Elias Mia after counting was completed at all 177 polling centers.
According to the returning officer’s office, Kamruzzaman Kamrul, a former organizational secretary of the Sunamganj district BNP and former chairman of Tahirpur Upazila, secured 163,795 votes. His nearest rival, Maulana Tofayel Ahmed Khan, the district Jamaat chief, received 91,176 votes under the balance symbol. Kamrul led in 173 of the 177 centers, winning by approximately 73,000 votes.
The constituency has a total of 501,555 registered voters, including 256,185 men, 245,360 women, and 10 third-gender voters, according to the latest official data.
