Seven fishermen from Shahparir Island in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, were reportedly abducted by Myanmar’s armed rebel group Arakan Army on Monday morning, June 15, 2026. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. near the estuary of the Naf River adjacent to Shahparir Island, where the group allegedly seized two fishing trawlers and took the fishermen across the border.

Local fishermen said the victims were fishing in the area when Arakan Army members arrived from the Rakhine side and detained them. They explained that the river’s border between Bangladesh and Myanmar is difficult to identify, causing fishermen to sometimes cross unintentionally. Such situations have previously led to similar abductions by the group.

Another fisherman described growing fear among locals, saying fishing in the Naf River and nearby sea has become increasingly dangerous due to frequent threats from the Arakan Army. Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer S. M. Anik Chowdhury confirmed awareness of the incident and said communication with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was underway regarding the matter.
