Suruj Sheikh, 27, a Bangladeshi construction worker from Akhalipara village in Boalmari, Faridpur, died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Saudi Arabia on Monday at about 12:30pm Bangladesh time. His family is now waiting for his body to be returned from Saudi Arabia. Sheikh, son of Arab Ali Sheikh, had worked in Huta, Riyadh, for about seven years and had planned to return home, marry and begin a new family life.
According to relatives, he developed severe abdominal pain and other health problems in early July and was admitted to hospital. Doctors identified complications inside his abdomen, and he underwent surgery on July 26. He initially showed some improvement, raising the family’s hopes that he might recover and return to work. However, he died while undergoing treatment after going to the hospital about a month later to have his surgical stitches removed.
Family members have appealed for government assistance to bring his body home quickly. Boalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Rakibul Hasan said authorities would try to assist through the relevant offices if relatives contacted them. Ashik Siddiqui, deputy director of Faridpur Probashi Kallyan Centre, said legal heirs could apply for government-funded repatriation and may receive about Tk350,000, plus Tk35,000 after arrival at the airport.
