Questions have been raised over the role of leaders of the Bangladesh Ship Breakers and Recyclers Association after 10 workers died from toxic gas at Ferdous Shipyard in Sitakunda, Chattogram. The workers were inside a tank of an old ship brought for dismantling on August 14 when the incident occurred. Several other workers became ill, and concerns have emerged over whether required safety procedures were followed before workers entered the tank.
Allegations say the association’s senior leaders did not visit victims’ relatives, injured workers receiving treatment, or workers involved in rescue efforts. Attempts to contact association president Mohsin Chowdhury on a foreign mobile number received no response, while some leaders’ phones were reportedly switched off. Ferdous Shipyard official Md Mohiuddin said former association president Amzad Hossain Chowdhury remained at the scene, but current leaders were not seen there.
Separate investigation committees formed by the Industries Ministry, Chattogram district administration and the association are examining the incident. Workers’ relatives and rescuers demand an independent investigation, identification of those responsible, compensation for bereaved families, treatment for injured workers and rescuers, and effective safety measures at shipyards.
