The six-lane upgrade of the 48 km Jessore–Jhenaidah Highway, launched in 2021 with a Tk 48 billion budget, faces delays due to government changes, incomplete land acquisition, and rising construction costs. The deadline has been extended to late 2026, with land acquisition costs tripled. Large portions of the road are riddled with potholes, severely disrupting transport between Khulna, Rajshahi, and southern districts. Locals and drivers report frequent vehicle damage and delays, while authorities promise repair work will accelerate as monsoon rains recede.

Jessore–Jhenaidah Highway: Slow Progress in Four-Lane Project, 48 km Road in Poor Condition

The project to upgrade a 48-kilometer stretch of the Jessore–Jhenaidah Highway to six lanes was sent to the Planning Commission in 2021. The Tk 48 billion project was initially scheduled for completion by December 2023. When that deadline was missed, the first extension pushed the completion date to June 2026. The revision proposes tripling land acquisition costs to Tk 26.5 billion.
