EC Seeks Power to Cancel Entire Constituency Vote Amid Election Reforms

Bangladesh’s Election Commission (EC) has proposed regaining the authority to cancel voting across an entire constituency in cases of electoral irregularities. It currently holds the power to nullify votes at specific centers only. The EC also decided to allow expatriate Bangladeshis to vote through an IT-based postal ballot system, allocating Tk 48 crore for the project. Additionally, it will no longer use EVMs in elections and plans to revise voter lists, redefine constituency boundaries, and enforce stricter affidavit requirements for candidates.

The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has proposed regaining its former authority to cancel voting for an entire constituency in cases of irregularities. The proposal was placed during the EC’s eighth meeting, though detailed discussions were deferred to the next session. Currently, the EC can only suspend polling at specific centers.
