A tribunal in Sylhet has sentenced two men to death for the rape of a minor girl, nearly 14 years after the incident. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by Judge Begum Rubaiya Yasmin of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. The convicts, Md. Zainal of Shahbazpur village and Nazim Uddin of Kandigaon village, both aged 25, were present in court during the announcement. The information was confirmed by tribunal APP Advocate Nur Ahmad.
According to court sources, on November 27, 2012, the two men abducted a 14-year-old girl from Kair Ghat in Sylhet’s Bishwanath upazila while she was on her way to her grandparents’ house and raped her at Zainal’s residence in Shahbazpur village. The victim’s father, Mosabbir, filed a case against the accused at Bishwanath Police Station. After a lengthy investigation, police submitted the charge sheet on June 4, 2023, and ten witnesses, including police officers, testified in the case.
The tribunal announced the death sentence for both convicts on the scheduled date for the verdict, concluding a prolonged legal process that began in 2012.
