Two prominent figures of Bangladesh’s July Revolution movement, Jannat Ara Rumi and Osman Sharif Hadi, died on the same day, triggering widespread grief and political debate. Police recovered Rumi’s body from a women’s hostel in Hazaribagh on Thursday morning, while Hadi, who had been shot by unidentified assailants on December 12 in Purana Paltan, succumbed to his injuries later that night, confirmed his brother Omar Hadi.

Rumi, a leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP), had reportedly faced continuous threats and online harassment, with party officials alleging police inaction despite formal complaints. Hadi, known for his outspoken anti-Awami League and anti-India positions, had recently gained attention through viral campaign videos and controversial political statements. His assassination has reignited concerns about political violence and safety of independent candidates.

Both deaths have intensified scrutiny of law enforcement and raised fears of escalating tensions ahead of upcoming elections. Civil society groups have called for impartial investigations, while supporters mourn what they describe as a silencing of dissenting voices in Bangladesh’s volatile political landscape.
