Bangladesh’s air defense system remains outdated and vulnerable despite its strategic location near India, China, and conflict-ridden Myanmar. While other nations deploy advanced multi-layered defense systems, Bangladesh relies on short-range, aging technology like the FM-90. The Air Force’s fleet includes mostly second or third-generation aircraft, ineffective against modern threats. Experts warn that without serious upgrades, the country’s security is at risk. With regional tensions escalating, military analysts urge immediate investment in radar, missiles, and drone capabilities to strengthen national defense.

Located in a Geopolitically Challenging Position: Bangladesh’s Air Defense System Extremely Vulnerable

While Iranian drones and missiles rained down over Israel, most were intercepted mid-air by the “Iron Dome.” In a 12-day war, Iran fired around 532 missiles at Israel, of which only 42 hit the ground—meaning Israel’s defense systems intercepted nearly 92% of them. Similarly, to counter Russian ballistic and cruise missiles over Ukraine, the U.S. Patriot system, Germany’s IRIS-T, and Israel’s David’s Sling have been deployed. Even in the recent skirmishes between India and Pakistan, India’s Russian-made S-400 and jointly-developed Barak-8 system were seen intercepting Pakistani missiles, while Pakistan responded with China’s long-range HQ-9/P and medium-range LY-80 systems.
