Former US diplomat Alan Eyre said President Donald Trump is trapped in an “impossible situation” over the ongoing war with Iran and cannot easily withdraw, even if he wants to. In an interview with Al Jazeera published on August 17, 2026, Eyre outlined what he described as Trump’s limited options and the complications surrounding talks with Iran.
Eyre said Trump cannot further escalate the war because he understands that increased US attacks could prompt Iran to intensify retaliatory strikes. Such retaliation could target energy infrastructure in the Gulf region, a scenario Trump is not prepared to accept, Eyre said. At the same time, he argued that Trump cannot simply walk away as he might from a business arrangement, because doing so would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Eyre, Iran also doubts whether Trump would implement any agreement reached with Tehran. He said Iran seeks more money at the start of an agreement and assurances that blocked assets will be released, reflecting its belief that the United States will not fully lift sanctions. Iran also wants immediate economic benefits from trade moving through the Strait of Hormuz. Mutual distrust, Eyre said, is making a ceasefire and nuclear understanding harder to achieve.
