Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal Rice Hoarding: Over 100 Businesses Fined

The Bangladeshi government has launched a nationwide operation in 44 districts to stabilize rice prices and prevent market manipulation. Over 100 businesses have been fined more than 1 million taka for illegal hoarding. The Consumer Rights Authority is also targeting the misleading marketing of "Miniket" rice, a variety that doesn’t officially exist. Several warehouses have been sealed. Consumer groups blame a syndicate of mill owners and importers for price hikes, urging stronger monitoring and stricter action to protect consumers and ensure fair market practices.

To stabilize the rice market and ensure smooth supply, the government of Bangladesh has launched a nationwide crackdown against illegal stockpiling and market manipulation. The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has already fined over 100 businesses a total of more than 1 million taka for hoarding rice and manipulating prices. Additionally, the agency is taking steps to stop the marketing of "Miniket" rice, a variety that officially does not exist in the country’s rice classification.
