Iran has warned that it will tighten the closure of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and could completely shut other Middle Eastern straits and key sea lanes if the United States continues military threats and its naval blockade. Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported the warning on Sunday, citing Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
Zolghadr said Iran would intensify restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz if the US government’s naval blockade and what he described as belligerent posture continued. He said other strategic straits and waterways would also be blocked. He warned that the consequences of disrupted sea routes would be borne by the global economy, world energy markets and ordinary US voters.
The report said Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz after the United States and Israel began a coordinated military operation on February 28. About 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas had moved through the route. Its closure for more than five months has disrupted energy supplies and raised oil prices. Yemen’s Houthi rebels, described as Iran’s regional allies, also imposed a Red Sea blockade against Saudi Arabia, while Saudi exports of 4.1 million barrels daily through that route in June have largely stalled.
