Pakistan’s Supreme Court order granting former prime minister Imran Khan medical-related arrangements has triggered debate over equality before the law for prisoners. On August 18, a three-member bench ordered his transfer from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, directed formation of a medical board and allowed weekly family visits. The next hearing is scheduled for September 16.

Khan’s family and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party say prison authorities have not properly implemented the court order, while the government has filed a review petition against it. The report says the central issue is not whether Khan should receive treatment, but whether other inmates with similar health conditions would receive comparable access to private hospitals, personal doctors and family support.

The report notes that the court did not have Khan’s complete medical records when it ordered the hospital transfer. Doctors recorded blood pressure readings of 140/100 on August 1 and 140/80 on August 10, with advice to lower blood pressure and walk daily. Pakistan’s information ministry says Khan has been examined nearly 30 times since his imprisonment in 2023.
