Hafizur Rahman, a retired army member and accused in the murder case of Victoria Government College student Sohagi Jahan Tanu, did not surrender within the 24-hour deadline set by the Appellate Division’s chamber court. Cumilla court inspector Sadikur Rahman confirmed on Friday at 9 pm that Hafizur had not appeared before the court after the deadline expired. Cumilla Central Jail’s senior jail superintendent Shah Alam Khan also confirmed that he had not appeared.

On Thursday, following a hearing on an application filed by the prosecution, the chamber court of Justice Md Rezaul Haque suspended the High Court’s bail order until August 9. The court ordered Hafizur to surrender within 24 hours and directed law-enforcement agencies to arrest him if he failed to comply.

The High Court granted Hafizur bail on August 2, and he was released from Cumilla Central Jail on August 4. Tanu went missing on the evening of March 20, 2016, while going to tutor at a house in Cumilla Cantonment; her body was later recovered from bushes near the cantonment’s powerhouse area. Family members said they fear Hafizur may flee.
