The United States has approved the proposed sale of military helicopters and related equipment to Iraq worth $800 million, the US State Department said in a statement on Monday. Bell Textron, a Fort Worth, Texas-based company, will be the principal contractor for the proposed transaction.
The State Department said the sale would support US foreign policy and national security interests by helping strengthen the security of Iraq, described as a strategic partner. The department presented the proposed transfer as part of support for Iraq’s security capabilities.
According to the statement, the equipment would improve Iraq’s ability to address current and future threats. It would enhance helicopter-based transportation and surveillance capabilities, while also improving Iraq’s capacity to conduct air-to-ground strikes against targets.
