A recent ICDDR,B study reveals that more than 90% of families in Dhaka’s slums are burdened by debt caused by food insecurity. Over half of these families struggle to secure daily meals due to irregular income, leading to nutritional deficiencies, especially among pregnant women, adolescents, and young children. The study highlights increased anemia, stunting, and underweight issues. The Nutri-Cap project introduced integrated nutrition and health services, improving pregnancy outcomes and child growth in these vulnerable communities.

ICDDR,B Research: Over 90% of Slum Dwellers’ Families Are in Debt

Although overall urban health indicators are better than those in rural areas, more than half of the families living in city slums suffer from food insecurity. Unable to secure daily meals through regular income, these families are forced to take loans. Over 90% of families facing food shortages are in debt. Due to lack of adequate nutrition, nearly 50% of slum residents and children there are growing up with stunted growth.
