Comilla University held its first official 'Resistance Day' event on Sunday afternoon at the university’s open stage, but the family of Abdul Kaiyum, the only student from the university killed during the July 2024 mass uprising, was not invited. Kaiyum, a student of the Accounting and Information Systems department from the 2018–19 session, was shot in Savar’s New Market area on August 5, 2024, while participating in the anti-discrimination student movement’s 'Long March to Dhaka' program. He died the following day while under treatment.

Kaiyum’s mother said that the university administration did not invite them and that she was unaware of the event. The ceremony featured Comilla University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. M. M. Shariful Karim as chief guest, with Dhaka University Professor and Public Service Commission member Dr. Chowdhury Saima Ferdous as the main discussant. The event included discussions, remembrances, and cultural performances.

According to the university administration, the Syndicate’s 110th meeting officially declared July 11 as 'Resistance Day' to commemorate the students’ protest and resistance against police attacks during the early phase of the July 2024 uprising.
