Bangladesh’s Amar Bangladesh Party, or AB Party, expressed deep sorrow and concern after 16 Bangladeshi expatriates died in a fire at a sofa factory in Riyadh’s Manfuha area of Saudi Arabia. In a joint condolence message, party chairman Mojibur Rahman Manju and secretary general Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuaad offered sympathy to the bereaved families. The fire occurred on Sunday, according to the source.

The leaders described the deaths of workers who had gone abroad for livelihoods as deeply painful and an irreparable loss for both their families and the nation. They said expatriate workers are among the driving forces of the country’s economy, while questions repeatedly arise over their safety and working conditions abroad. They added that Bangladeshi workers should not be viewed only as sources of foreign currency, and that their lives and safety have equal value.

AB Party called on the government to swiftly return the bodies of those killed, provide appropriate financial assistance and compensation to every family, and ensure treatment and necessary support for injured or affected Bangladeshis. It also urged regular monitoring by Bangladeshi embassies and missions of workplaces, housing and fire-safety arrangements for workers abroad.
