To improve rice and fish output, authorities opened the Talimnagar sluice gate in Gaznar Beel, Sujanagar, Pabna. Due to reduced water levels, Boro Aman rice and native fish were struggling. New water from the Jamuna and Padma rivers was allowed in, helping crops and fish thrive. Over 2,700 hectares were planted with Boro Aman, targeting 4,377 tons of yield. Officials said water will not harm the rice but improve growth. Farmers welcomed the move, calling it essential for a better harvest.

Sluice Gate Opened to Boost Rice and Fish Production in Gaznar Beel

The Gaznar Beel in Sujanagar Upazila of Pabna used to retain water year-round. However, due to reduced navigability, the beel now holds water for only six months a year, remaining dry for the rest. The beel spans around 6,000 hectares, comprising both government and privately owned land. Alongside rice, a variety of crops are cultivated here, and it also serves as a natural habitat for indigenous fish.
