The United Nations condemned the killing of civilians in the Gaza Strip and called for protection of health-care facilities in the besieged territory. In remarks reported on August 4, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said the organization condemns all killings of civilians.
Haq said Gaza health authorities reported that more than 150 people were killed in Israeli attacks in July, the highest monthly death toll since the start of the year. He also expressed concern over an Israeli attack on Friday at a medical-supplies warehouse near Al-Aqsa Hospital, which was reported destroyed.
The UN official said health-care facilities should never be attacked or used for military purposes. He warned that stocks of insulin for people with diabetes, medicines needed by heart patients, and other medical supplies were running low. Alcohol-based disinfectants needed for hand hygiene and infection prevention were also nearly unavailable. Haq said many additional medical supplies required for infection prevention and control were awaiting Israeli approval to enter Gaza.
