Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the government is not taking into account a United Nations report on Al Qaeda’s expansion in Bangladesh, describing it as speculative. He made the remarks to journalists on Monday afternoon, August 17. The issue returned to public discussion after a recent UN Security Council report expressed concern about Al Qaeda activity in Bangladesh.

The government has said there is no militant activity in the country. In contrast, the UN report said Al Qaeda was trying to establish permanent bases and clandestine cells in Bangladesh. It also said law-enforcement officials had indicated that the matter would be examined.

According to the report, AQIS is transforming from a fragmented group into a regional terrorist organization. It said the group is operating through small, dispersed cells rather than large units and has developed strong logistical and financial networks. On law and order, Ahmed said the government had improved the situation but would need more time to meet public expectations, adding that it had completed only six months and undertaken many reform measures.
