Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal-1 has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July 2024 uprising. The three-member bench, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, delivered the verdict on November 17. The tribunal found Hasina and two co-defendants guilty on all five charges, including incitement, conspiracy, and failure to prevent atrocities. The court ruled that Hasina bore superior command responsibility for the actions of law enforcement and armed groups that attacked unarmed protesters following her inflammatory remarks at a July 14 press conference. She received life imprisonment until natural death for one count and death sentences on three others, including ordering lethal attacks using helicopters and drones, and involvement in killings in Dhaka’s Chankharpul and Ashulia areas.
