A Gopalganj family appellate court on Wednesday upheld a six-month rigorous imprisonment term and Tk5,000 fine against former Baitul Mukarram khatib Mufti Ruhul Amin in a dispute over ancestral property. Judge Shahnaz Nasrin Khan dismissed Amin’s appeal and ordered him to surrender before the lower court. The court also rejected the complainant’s appeal seeking a longer sentence.
The case was filed on January 9, 2024, by Fatema Begum, the wife of Amin’s late elder brother, Hafez Maulana Omar Ahmed. She alleged that although each brother held a 17-percent share of a 34-percent plot in Sriramkandi mouza, Amin forcibly occupied the entire land, built a wall, threatened family members and issued a death threat against her.
Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Ali Talha convicted Amin on October 5, 2025, sentencing him to six months of rigorous imprisonment and imposing the fine. The ruling said he would face an additional month in jail if the fine was not paid. The appellate decision leaves the lower court’s sentence unchanged, while the complainant said her side was awaiting implementation of the verdict.
