Several heads of state have congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman following his party’s landslide victory in the 13th national parliamentary election held on 12 February 2026. According to unofficial results announced by the Election Commission, the BNP won 209 seats, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats. With more than two-thirds of the seats, the BNP is preparing to form the next government.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Tarique Rahman on 13 February to convey his congratulations, reaffirming India’s commitment to peace and prosperity between the two neighboring nations. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also extended their congratulations, emphasizing democratic partnership and mutual progress. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described the victory as a triumph of democracy, while the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka congratulated the people of Bangladesh for a successful election and BNP for leading the results. Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu also congratulated Rahman and expressed hope for stronger bilateral ties.
The series of congratulatory messages from regional leaders highlights growing international attention to Bangladesh’s political transition following the BNP’s decisive win.
