Allegations of irregularities and corruption have emerged over the excavation of the Basbaria canal in Keshabpur, Jashore. The canal was allegedly excavated in fiscal year 2023-24, yet funds were allocated again in fiscal year 2025-26 for the same work. Under an employment programme for the ultra-poor, Tk 5,154,189 was allocated to excavate a 3.350-metre stretch from Dharmapur Bridge. Work began on May 23 and was completed by June 30.
Project chairman and Sagardari Union Parishad member Md Kamrul Islam said administration and Project Implementation Office officials instructed subcontractor Moklesur Rahman Mukul to use an excavator. Workers said they were supposed to receive Tk 500 daily but were paid Tk 300. They also alleged that only 50 to 60 workers were employed for eight to 10 days.
Mukul said his work bill was about Tk 2.1 million but he received Tk 1.45 million, alleging the remainder was shared by relevant officials. Kamrul Islam said Mukul was paid Tk 1.45 million under the agreement and handled earthwork with labourers. Project Implementation Officer Istiaq Hossain denied corruption allegations, saying the work followed the project plan, and said he did not know whether the canal had been excavated in 2023-24.
