Bangladesh’s University Grants Commission (UGC) plans to establish International and Research Offices at every university to connect higher education more closely with global academic networks. UGC Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed announced the initiative as chief guest at an Erasmus Plus information session held at the commission on Tuesday.

The offices are intended to strengthen institutional ties with foreign universities and research institutions, facilitate teacher and student exchanges, support joint research and joint or dual-degree programmes, and seek international research grants. They could also help create joint laboratories and innovation centres. Ahmed said global networks and institutional collaboration increasingly shape higher-education quality, research capacity and universities’ international standing.

UGC said it will provide policy support, staff development, capacity building and necessary funding to make the offices effective and sustainable. Universities will need to prepare internationalisation strategies based on their own priorities and capacities. The commission is also pursuing an academic diaspora network to involve Bangladeshi teachers, researchers and professionals abroad in research, teaching, joint projects, supervision and capacity-development activities at domestic universities.
