The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has decided to instruct all public and private universities to ensure free Wi-Fi facilities within the shortest possible time. The directive, now in its final stage of issuance, aims to provide free internet access across campuses. The decision was made at a meeting held on Wednesday at the UGC office, chaired by UGC Chairman Dr. Mamun Ahmed, with participation from UGC members, officials from the Higher Education Improvement Transformation (HEIT) project, and the Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN).

According to the meeting, universities will be directed to provide free Wi-Fi in libraries, common rooms, and cafeterias within 60 working days. BdREN will assist in implementing the initiative, which will later be expanded to residential halls and other educational and research facilities. The move aligns with the government’s election pledge to expand digital facilities in education, support students’ learning and research, and reduce digital inequality.

UGC officials were also instructed to develop student-friendly digital infrastructure across higher education institutions to strengthen the country’s digital education ecosystem.
