Bangladesh’s interim government faces backlash over its Draft Telecom Policy 2025, which proposes restructuring the telecom licensing framework. Industry stakeholders fear the changes will harm local businesses, reduce government revenue, and lead to mass job losses. The policy introduces new licensing categories and plans to phase out existing ones like IGW and ICX. Critics argue frequent policy shifts disrupt investment and stability. Meanwhile, the government claims the new policy aims to reduce consumer costs and modernize the sector with a sustainable digital infrastructure.

Debate Erupts Over Interim Government's Draft Telecom Policy

A debate has begun surrounding the draft telecom policy proposed by the interim government. In April, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications initiated a draft policy aimed at restructuring the country's telecommunications licensing framework. However, stakeholders have raised objections soon after its release. They argue that if implemented, the policy could negatively affect local enterprises and employment within the telecom sector. On the other hand, the government claims the new policy is designed to reduce voice call and data costs for consumers. They argue that those who benefited from the previous multi-tier licensing system are primarily the ones opposing the changes.
