Flash floods and landslides in Nepal’s Tibet-bordering area have killed 162 people, while 403 others remain missing, authorities said. Of those missing, 341 are foreign nationals and most are believed to be Indian. Nepal Police said Thursday morning that 64 bodies were recovered downstream in Chitwan district and another 26 in Nawalparasi East. Twenty-eight police personnel are also among those unaccounted for.
The Bhote Koshi river area in Rasuwa has suffered extensive damage to homes, roads and bridges, and authorities warned the death toll could rise. Water levels are also increasing in Chitwan, a tourism centre known for jungle safaris, and several municipalities have issued high alerts. About eight tonnes of relief supplies have been sent to affected areas, while the United States, China, the European Union, India and Bangladesh have pledged assistance.
USGS said the disaster was triggered not by an earthquake, as initially suspected, but by a glacier collapse and debris flow. Authorities are examining possible sudden glacial-lake discharge, river blockages and recent rainfall. Across the border in Tibet’s Gyirong County, 558 people, including 260 foreigners, are missing and three deaths have been reported.
