The Liton Chowdhury Bridge in Madaripur's Shibchar is at risk due to severe riverbank erosion near the Arial Khan River. Built without protective embankments, the 550-meter bridge has seen erosion less than 100 feet from a pillar as monsoon waters rise. Local residents and engineers warn that further damage could threaten the structure. Opened in late 2023, the bridge improved regional connectivity but now faces urgent protection needs. Authorities say steps will be taken to prevent further erosion around the bridge.

Riverbank Erosion Threatens Bridge over Arial Khan River in Madaripur

In Shibchar, Madaripur, erosion has begun along the Arial Khan River, posing a serious risk to the Liton Chowdhury Bridge. The bridge, which spans 550 meters, was opened to traffic in 2023 but was built without essential riverbank protection structures. As the monsoon season begins, erosion has started on the southern side of the Naya Bazar end of the bridge, with parts of the riverbank already collapsing into the river. The erosion has come dangerously close—less than 100 feet—from one of the bridge’s pillars, putting the entire structure at risk.
