Icelandic architects from S APP Architecture envision a revolutionary project to build sustainable cities by harnessing volcanic lava. Their “Lava Forming” concept involves controlling lava flow and cooling processes to create building materials like walls, pillars, and insulation. Inspired by Iceland’s active volcanoes, the project explores methods including lava channels, future 3D printing robots, and underground magma chambers. Though still experimental, this approach could reduce carbon emissions and transform hazardous lava into a renewable resource for construction in volcanic regions worldwide.

Scientists Want to Build Cities Using Lava from Volcanoes

Lava emitted from active volcanoes has historically been known as a dangerous, unstoppable natural force. There are many instances where lava flows have destroyed buildings and settlements. But what if this power of lava could be controlled to build new cities? An Icelandic architectural firm, S APP Architecture, has come up with such a bold idea. They presented this concept at this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale.
