Iran is sending the United States a dual message: it is preparing for possible escalation while keeping the door open to a diplomatic settlement. In a report published on August 2, 2026, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was said to have conveyed that position in telephone calls with foreign ministers from Turkey, Saudi Arabia and other regional countries, as well as Pakistani officials acting as mediators.

Araghchi said Iran is ready to take part in renewed diplomatic dialogue as long as the diplomatic path remains open. At the same time, he stressed that Iran has a right to self-defense and would exercise that right if necessary. Analysts cited in the report said the stance signals the possibility of another round of escalation in the future.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s joint military headquarters and senior army officials have issued similar messages, saying Iran is prepared for a prolonged war if conditions deteriorate. They also said a conflict could spread beyond the Middle East. The report described the situation as uncertain, fragile and complex, with doubts over the ceasefire’s durability and unresolved disputes that could be addressed through diplomacy or lead to renewed military tensions.
