Indonesia has trained 20,000 soldiers in preparation for a potential peacekeeping mission in Gaza, according to Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. The troops are expected to focus on health and construction-related operations if deployed. Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, is among the countries—alongside Azerbaijan, Egypt, and Qatar—discussing with the United States the formation of a multinational force to stabilize Gaza. A recent Reuters report indicated that Washington is drafting plans for such a force to demilitarize Gaza, secure its borders, protect civilians, and support relief efforts and a new Palestinian police unit. However, Indonesia has not yet decided when or under what mandate the troops will be deployed. President Prabowo Subianto is expected to discuss the initiative with Jordan’s King Abdullah during his state visit. Earlier, Prabowo told the UN General Assembly that Indonesia was ready to send 20,000 or more troops if a UN resolution called for peacekeeping.
