The death toll from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has surpassed 2,000, with over 3,400 injured and more than 200 people still missing. In response to the disaster, the government has declared a seven-day national mourning period starting Monday, during which the national flag will be flown at half-mast. Meanwhile, in Thailand, the death toll has risen to 19, with 75 individuals still unaccounted for. On Monday, rescue teams in Mandalay pulled four people alive from the rubble, including a pregnant woman and a child. A Chinese rescue team also successfully saved an individual using a thermal blanket. Myanmar’s ongoing civil war has made it difficult to deliver aid to many affected areas. Rebel groups have accused the military of continuing airstrikes even after the earthquake, further exacerbating the crisis.
