Iran and Oman have agreed on a new temporary shipping corridor for vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tuesday. Tehran said it will not consider the strategic waterway fully open until the United States fulfils commitments under an interim peace agreement signed in June. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi discussed the framework for the temporary route in Tehran on the same day.

Gharibabadi said the corridor’s entrance would pass through Iranian territorial waters, as would part of its exit route. The proposed channel would be about seven miles, or 11.3 kilometres, wide. Before the war between the United States-Israel and Iran began in February, about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through the strait, but most vessel traffic has halted since then.

Al-Busaidi said on X that the two countries hoped to announce the corridor soon. Their joint statement said technical discussions would develop a long-term management framework covering information exchange, navigation and security services. Mine clearance was also discussed, while a British maritime trade monitoring body reported that an oil tanker near Oman’s Ash Shishah area was disabled after being struck by an unidentified object.
