The National Citizen Party (NCP) held a torch march in Rangpur on Monday evening to protest the killings of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife and their two children. The procession began at July Memorial Square at about 7pm, travelled through key city roads and ended at the Press Club premises, where participants held a brief rally.

NCP leaders and activists from the district, metropolitan area, affiliated organisations and several upazilas attended. Speakers protested what they described as an inadequate investigation into the killing of four members of the same family. District convener Al Mamun said Rangpur’s law-and-order situation had deteriorated and alleged that the city was facing disorder involving killings, drugs and extortion.

Mamun said Rangpur was a peaceful city with Hindu-Muslim brotherhood and called for a deeper investigation into whether any conspiracy sought to damage that relationship. He also said he had initiated plans for open complaint boxes at every police station, where residents could provide information about drug traders, extortionists and criminals. Speakers demanded an impartial investigation, swift identification of those responsible, exemplary punishment and justice for the victims’ family.
