Bangladesh’s Press Minister in Washington, Golam Mortoza, has commented on the impending verdict in the war crimes tribunal case involving ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two others, accused of crimes against humanity during the July 2024 mass uprising. In a Facebook post on November 17, Mortoza stated that the death penalty would be a lesser punishment compared to the gravity of Hasina’s alleged crimes. He suggested that life imprisonment would be a more fitting sentence, ensuring accountability for her actions. Mortoza praised those who led and participated in the bloody uprising and said the swift trial of those accused of abductions and killings was a significant achievement. He also criticized individuals attempting to question the trial process or defend the accused, urging the public to decide whether such people deserve sympathy or disdain. The tribunal’s verdict is expected to draw widespread attention both domestically and internationally.
