The trial of former Superintendent of Police Anisur Rahman and seven others has begun at International Crimes Tribunal-1 over the 2016 incident in which two Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders were allegedly shot and crippled by police in Jhikargacha, Jashore. The prosecution opened its arguments on Tuesday, followed by testimony from victim Israfi Hossain, who recounted the events leading to his arrest and subsequent shooting.
According to Israfi’s testimony, he and fellow Shibir leader Ruhul Amin were detained by police on August 3, 2016, after being stopped near Bandalitola village. He described severe physical abuse at the police station and said senior officers, including the then-SP, were involved in ordering the assault. Israfi alleged that both men were later shot in the legs and left untreated, leading to infections that required amputation.
The tribunal heard that the victims were later charged under the Arms and Explosives Acts before being released on bail. Israfi demanded maximum punishment for the accused, claiming similar abuses had occurred to others in custody.
