On the eve of the national election, several individuals were detained across Bangladesh for carrying large sums of money, including 7.4 million taka seized from Thakurgaon Jamaat leader Belal Uddin at Saidpur Airport and 1.5 million taka recovered from BNP candidate Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie’s campaign vehicle in Lakshmipur. These incidents sparked public curiosity about the legal limit for carrying cash during the election period.

A media report had earlier quoted Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed as saying there was no limit on carrying money if its source and use were legitimate, even up to 50 million taka. However, Ahmed later denied making such a statement, clarifying that he had neither the authority nor the capacity to comment on financial matters. In response to the confusion, Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan stated that there is no fixed limit on carrying cash under normal circumstances, but any specific restrictions during elections would depend on directives from the Election Commission.

The clarification aims to address public uncertainty over financial regulations during the election period.
