No case had been filed three days after nine workers died from toxic gas exposure at Ferdous Steel Shipyard in Sitakunda, Chattogram. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, while Sitakunda police officer-in-charge Mohinul Islam said on Sunday afternoon that no affected family had come to file a case. He said police were preparing to file a case themselves if the families did not do so.

The Shipbreaking Workers Trade Union Forum held a protest gathering and human chain outside Chattogram Press Club, blaming the owners for the deaths and demanding a proper investigation. Speakers said workers’ lives must not be valued below industrial production and profit. They also said both owners and the state were responsible for ensuring workplace safety.

The Bangladesh Ship Recycling Board temporarily closed Ferdous Steel Shipyard and ordered all operations halted until further notice. Four investigation committees have been formed, including a newly announced three-member specialist panel with representatives from BUET, Bangladesh Maritime University and the Department of Explosives. Board Director General A. S. M. Shafiul Alam Talukdar said the investigation was ongoing and an expert team from Dhaka would arrive on Sunday.
