Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud has confirmed that city corporation elections will take place after the upcoming Ramadan. He made the announcement on Sunday afternoon while addressing the executive committee election of the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy (RFED) at the Election Commission building in Agargaon, Dhaka. Masud stated that before the city polls, several by-elections are scheduled, and their schedules have already been announced.
He added that the Election Commission will remain busy throughout the year with various local government elections. Emphasizing the commission’s responsibility, Masud said it is bound by law to ensure fair elections, while the formulation of election laws is the responsibility of the parliament. The commission is currently awaiting a parliamentary decision on whether political party symbols will be used in local government elections.
Masud also mentioned that the recently held 13th national election and referendum were conducted properly, and the commission will review any shortcomings. He urged journalists to perform their duties impartially while offering constructive criticism of the commission’s activities.
