Police in Chattogram have arrested a private bank officer, Anamika Dutta, 32, on charges of embezzling nearly Tk 2.9 million from a customer. She was detained Wednesday night in the city’s New Market area and sent to jail on Thursday following a court order. According to the case statement, Dutta befriended a customer named Debika and convinced her that the bank might go bankrupt, persuading her to break her fixed deposit. Dutta then allegedly transferred Tk 14.79 lakh from Debika’s account at the Anderkilla branch and another Tk 14 lakh from the Jubilee Road branch into her own account. When Debika realized the fraud, she filed a case with Kotwali Police Station. Police said an investigation is underway to determine how the funds were misappropriated.
