Paris witnessed both jubilation and unrest on the night of May 31, 2026, after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defeated Arsenal in the Champions League final in Budapest. Following the dramatic tiebreaker victory, thousands of fans flooded the streets of the French capital, particularly around the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées, to celebrate with fireworks, flags, and car horns. Local authorities estimated around 20,000 people gathered in the area.

However, parts of the celebration turned violent as isolated groups engaged in vandalism and arson. Paris police reported attempts to attack a police station in the city’s 8th arrondissement, which were quickly dispersed. One police officer was injured, and a bakery and a restaurant were damaged. Police detained at least 45 people by 10 p.m., and temporary road blockades caused further disruption on the city’s ring road.

Authorities had deployed about 8,000 officers across Paris in anticipation of possible unrest, recalling similar incidents during last year’s celebrations. Despite the precautions, the night ended with both triumph and tension for the French champions and their supporters.
