A special judge’s court in Noakhali sentenced three defendants to death and three others to life imprisonment in a widely discussed triple murder case in Noakhali Sadar. Judge Md. Shawkat Ali of the Noakhali Special Judge’s Court delivered the verdict at about noon on Sunday. Each person sentenced to life imprisonment was also fined Tk100,000, with an additional year in prison if the fine is unpaid.

Those sentenced to death are Omar Nasir Saju, Omar Sharif Sultan and Md. Sourav. Firoz Mahmud Bappi, Kudrat Ullah and Harunur Rashid Babul received life terms. According to the case account, an argument over bathing a dog in a hostel pond beside Noakhali Government College on May 21, 2016 led to a local mediation meeting and a subsequent attack. Wasim, Rajib and Yasin were shot and later died.

Rajib’s wife, Kamrun Nahar Chhobi, filed the murder case with Sudharam police station. The prosecution said the court issued its ruling after hearing 19 witnesses. The verdict was announced in the presence of the only arrested accused, Firoz Alam Bappi, while five other accused have remained absconding since the case was filed. Rajib’s mother and brother expressed satisfaction and called for the fugitives’ arrest and implementation of the verdict.
