Residents of Chitalmari upazila in Bagerhat are facing severe rural electricity load shedding, disrupting daily life, businesses and education, according to a report published on August 3, 2026. For the past several weeks, power has been unavailable for much of the day across the upazila. Frequent outages during both daytime and nighttime have interrupted normal activities, while the intense heat has added to residents’ hardship.

Business and small-scale production have been affected by the outages, residents said. Alamgir Sheikh, owner of the small enterprise RP Bakery, said excessive load shedding had affected business. Durgapur resident Nahida Yasmin and others expressed frustration, saying HSC candidates and other students cannot study properly at night, while the heat makes sleeping difficult. Residents called for the matter to be addressed urgently.

Md. Shah Alam, additional DGM engineer at the Chitalmari Palli Bidyut Samity zonal office, said demand for roughly 43,000 customers in the upazila is 10 megawatts. Supply over a 24-hour period is only 5 to 6 megawatts, he said, causing frequent load shedding because available power falls short of demand. He said the issue has been reported to higher authorities for resolution.
