Students of Dhaka University staged a sit-in protest in front of Shahbagh Police Station on Tuesday afternoon, condemning an alleged police assault on Naimuddin, a student of the university’s anthropology department. The demonstration, which began at 1 p.m., drew over a hundred students from various departments. They demanded the removal of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ramna Zone Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam and exemplary punishment for those involved.

According to the protesters, the incident occurred Monday night during an anti-drug operation at Suhrawardy Udyan, where police allegedly attacked university students and journalists, injuring two reporters who were later treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Students accused the police of unprofessional behavior, describing the operation as a “drama” and criticizing what they called “celebrity policing” by broadcasting raids live on social media. They also alleged previous incidents of police abuse at Shahbagh Police Station.

The students presented three demands: an immediate end to all forms of harassing policing, a formal investigation into the assault, and assurance of student safety and human rights. They also called for disciplinary action against all officers involved and an unconditional apology from DC Masud Alam.
